Shenandoah Riverside Festival

Watermelon Park, Berryville, Virginia

June 14-15, 2013

by Reed A. George

For the second consecutive year, I spent a beautiful weekend in June by the Shenandoah River, listening to great music and convening with friends. The Shenandoah Riverside Fest is hosted annually by Earth Korps, who puts heroic efforts into cleaning up the river. So, we’re doing something good for the river while we enjoy it in the summer sun.

Here was the lineup from this year’s show:

Friday June 14th

5:30-6:30 Banana Express

7-8 Circa Blue

830-10 Lonesome River Band

10:30-11:30 Hackensaw Boys

Sat: June15th

12:12:45 Porch Pickers Brigade

1:15-2:00 Travelin Hillbillies

2:30-3:30 Stoney Creek

4-5 Lonesome Highway

5:30-6:30 Dry Mill Road

7-8 The Woodshedders

8:30-10:00 Russell Moore and Third Tyme Out

10:15- Holy Ghost Tent Revival

Unfortunately, I had other commitments on this weekend, so had to drop in and out a couple of times, and did not get to camp. I did get there early on the 14th to see Banana Express, a great young band from Winchester, Virginia, and saw all of the Friday night acts.

The Lonesome River Band has been together for 30 years. They have an impressive recording history, and are a blast to see on-stage.

Wrapping up the Friday lineup, the Hackensaw Boys really threw down some tunes. This was my first exposure to the band, but certainly won’t be my last. They kept the crowd moving non-stop throughout their set. Percussionist Brian Gorby wins the strangest instrument contest, with his collection of stuff to beat on, known as a “charismo.”

My coverage of Saturday was more spotty. I did catch the Lonesome Highway, and The Woodshedders.

The Woodshedders are local favorites in the area, and hosts of the annual Watermelon Park Festival in September. They really put on a good show for us on this beautiful Saturday afternoon in June.

As always, the audience was kind, into the music, and had a good time.

What a great way to spend the weekend. Let’s hope Earth Korps continues the traditions – hosting this wonderful festival by the river, and doing good things for the environment!

Earth Korps Update!!

Hey everyone,

I know it seems like it has been forever since we have posted. Well that’s because it has and we have been doing all kinds of awesome stuff over the past month to get Earth Korps geared up and ready for this spring.

for starters we have finally got our line-up finalized for the 2013 Shenandoah Riverside Festival and are updating our website http://www.shenandoahriversidefestival.com as we speak to bring everyone up to date with this years bands and early bird ticket sale specials. I can guarantee that you do not want to miss this years line-up. We will be announcing bands as we go along from now until the festival hits starting with last years late night favorite- HOLY GHOST TENT REVIVAL!! Who if you remembered correctly were the guys that had you dancing yourselves silly all night long.

Were no even close to being done so stay tuned on that note and be sure to check out http://www.shenandoahriversidefestival.com in the next week or so to see the new flyer and other updates as well.

We are also getting ready to open the slots for our 2013 craft and food vendors for the Shenandoah Riverside Festival. By the way, this is to take place on June 14th and 15th this year at Watermelon Park. If you would like to be considered for one of these spot please send an e-mail to earthkorps@yahoo.com

We are now Seeking SPONSORS for the 2013 Shenandoah Riverside Festival. If you would like to be considered please send an e-mail to earthkorps@yahoo.com There are some great perks to being a sponsor this year other than just having your companies name posted everywhere. We will be having other incentives such as free tickets and close parking, things to that nature so send us an email. We’d love to have you.

We had some great news in that we have been approved for a 3 year stay at Watermelon Park which is a huge deal and will ensure the success and growth of the festival and of Earth Korps at least for the next 3 years haha.

We are in the process of writing some great grants and planning some awesome river cleans for this spring so keep your ears and eyes posted on those. We are going to try to get more youth groups involved this year such as boy scouts or church youth groups. If you have any affiliation with any of these types of groups on the Shenandoah River and would like for your kids to get a first hand lesson in environmental appreciation please send an e-mail to earthkorps@yahoo.com and we will arrange a river clean for them to take place in in 2013.

Also we would just like to continue to thank all of those who have supported and stand by the mission of cleaning up the Shenandoah River and we will continue to do as much as we can to help this great natural resource!

Hey folks,

Thought I would let you all know that Captain Billy’s Seafood in Woodstock VA hasagreed to donate 10% of all profits from this coming weekends sales back to Earth Korps Inc. So go on in there and get yourself some good food fresh from the Chesapeake. Makes sense, the Shenandoah does end up right where they pull their food from. A great example of how and why we should all be working together in the name of conservation of our local watersheds.

We are coming into our planning season here soon so you won’t see quite as much activity from Earth Korps, but don’t worry we’re still hard at it and will keep you up to date on upcoming river cleans and events. Speaking of river cleans, why not come out and help Friends of the North Fork do one of their annual cleans here soon on October 27th. More details to come. Stay posted! As always, thanks to all of those who support their local river clean up company in one way or another it’s entirely due to our fans that we are able to do what we do.

Beer Fest Follow-up/ October News

Hey folks,

Hope you all came out to the Belgravia Beer fest to benefit Earth Korps. I was a great time and we had a good turnout, so if you weren’t there you better make sure to make it next time. You don’t know what you’re missing. I should have some pictures coming very soon, and in fact there are a few on Facebook taken by others that I will post.

In other news we have a big project going on right now in Front Royal where riverton dam used to be. You will notice a sign that teh site is closed due to construction right now. We are a part of putting in a new boat ramp and re vamping the whole area to better suit foot traffic and vehicle traffic alike. When we are finished there should be a permanant bathroom fixture there and also a dumpster to keep the place cleaner. There are some great companies kicking in for this project and I will be sure to mention them when I get the full list of contributors. Untill then though I would like to thank all who are involved and wish them good luck in turning this project into a success.

This should keep us busy for a while, but if we get some other projects such as river cleans in the near future you will be the first to know.

As always we are looking for sponsors and folks to support the mission of this organization without the folks that take a more active approach in this organization we would not exist. If you would like to become a sponsor of Earth Korps Inc please send an e-mail to earthkorps@yahoo.com. We look forward to hearing from you.

We are also knee deep in planning next years Shenandoah Riverside Festival and trust me it is going to be a doozy. Stay tuned for more of that and thanks to all of you who support the Shenandoah River and our mission to see her back to health.

September News!!

Hey Folks,

I figured it was getting to be about time for an update of all around Earth Korps info. Did you know that we are up over 54,000 pounds of trash removed from the Shenandoah River now.

It’s been a very quick 2 years but we’ve come a long way and that is due to our awesome support by not only our fans who push us on social media sites but also due to our awesome sponsors and folks who keep this organization going through monitary contributions.

We’d like to give a big thank to new sponsor Starr Rentals of Harrisonburg Va for sponsoring the Belgravia Beer Festival and Earth Korps by donating a big screen for the Beer Fest. We would also like to give a big thanks to the Woodstock Chamber of Commerce for working closely with us on severa events here lately and doing thier part to spread the word about Earth Korps fundraisers and upcoming events. Also Shentel for doing another County Conversations piece on Earth Korps and upcoming Belgravia Beer Fest. Our video can be seen on Simply Locals Facebook page.

Beer Fest is coming fast and we expect to see you all there. As an added perk we will be featuring the VA Tech Game on a big screen outside of the beer fest as well. So bring a lawn chair and wear your tech garb.

River Clean 9/11/12

Hey folks,

Long time no see. We have been up to our eye balls in work trying to bring you great projects and river conservation. We are in the midst of a large project right now with the Shenandoah Riverkeeper and a few other organizations to do some work to a public boat landing, but I’ll go into that more when the time comes.

Hope you see us on tv3 soon as we just did a story with Friends of the North Fork of the Shenadoah River about our organizations and about our upcoming events. Ours being the Belgravia Beer and Wine Festival, which has pre-sale tickets available at http://www.earthkorps.org.

We did a clean the other day and probably found the coolest thing that I have ever found in the river, it is called a Ganesha and is the Hindu symbol for good luck. It is actually hindu god of good luck and health and prosperity and all of those things that everyone always hopes they end up with at the end of the day. I thought that was a pretty neat one. Our clean yielded quite a few tires and a large metal canister of some sort. We only had one boat with us, but we filled that boat to the brim, and it was sketchy to say the least of the float back. I hope you enjoy it because we went through a lot on this load. Until next time, thanks to everyone who supports Earth Korps and our mission to clean the Shenandoah River watershed.

Finally made it in our first book!!

Hey folks,

I thought I would show you all this awesome surprise I got in the mail the other day. A while back I had done an interview with a lady from Fredrick County Public Works and forgot all about it until I got this package in the mail with these awesome little books inside. I don’t know if you will be able to read the article from the pictures, but I put them on here anyway. Thanks Gloria for seeing our cause as worthy to be in this book! Stay tuned for more news.

Adopt a Highway Clean 8/31/12

Hey folks,

We decided to do a road clean today for our adopted section of the road Belgravia instead of the river clean. We are looking to do the river clean planned sometime this weekend, but it seemed like a good day to just spend some time outside fulfilling our prior commitments. I took to the road with a bunch of trash bags, a four wheeler, a stick with a nail in it and some water and ended up with two bags full of trash (mainly beer cans) and two tires. I got some great pictures and also found a dump site that probably has 20 bags worth of trash waiting to be picked up, but it looked oddly like a rattlesnake den so I figured I would wait until I had someone around me to drive me to the hospital if need be. Until next time, enjoy our pictures and stay tuned.

Hey folks,

I thought I would let you know about the latest awesome group that has decided to back Earth Korps and the mission to clean up the Shenandoah. Joe’s Steak House is new up on the menu as a sponsor and we look forward to doing a lot of great business with them in the future. Also, don’t forget to come to Belgravia Beer and Wine Festival on October 6th and sample some of Joe’s great food. Thanks a lot Joe and the Joe’s Steak House family.

Stay tuned for more news from Earth Korps, We’ve got some river cleaning and a bunch of other great stuff coming your way soon. P.S. if you are wondering why the slack of river cleans here lately we have two answers for you. One- we have been very busy planning other projects that are going to greatly impact the river’s future and two, it is snake hatching season so we figured we’d give the little guys a chance to hatch and get away from their nests before we go prodding around gathering trash. Nothing worst than an angry snake.
