Hey Folks,

This is your captain speaking. Sorry for the continued delay in blogging. We have been exceptionally busy securing a new venue for 2012′s Shenandoah Riverside Festival, booking bands, and putting in some last minute grants that were all scrunched together. Needless to say, time is a little hard to find. I would like to remind everyone though that if you intend to come on out to a river clean-up day in 2012 we have a neat little system worked out now to where we can let folks know ahead of time. All you need to do is send an e-mail expressing your interest in the river to jenniferndalke@gmail.com and she will add you to the list. Don’t worry this does;t mean that you’ll be getting a bunch of junk mail. You’ll only be hearing about the most important events of Earth Korps, keeping you in the loop. Thanks to everybody for supporting the Shenandoah River clean-up project and we cannot wait to get back out on the water in some warmer weather to bring you pictures of our crazy finds again.

Hey folks,

I figured as we get further into this festival planning thing I’d go ahead and let you listen to the submissions I’m getting and decide who you really want to hear this year. I’ve gotten quite a few already and I’ll post a new one every few days. Without further adue here is the Luke Johnson Band. If you love their music then drop us an opinion on facebook about it.

P.S. We have just gotten word of an incredible grant opportunity that the winner gets voted on by the public so get ready to do your part for the river. All I need is a vote from each and every one of you.

2012 S.R.F Headliner Survey

Hey folks,

I’m starting to look at a possible headliner for this years festival. This is your chance to cast your vote for who you want to hear. I’m not talking about bringing back the kiss tour or anything crazy like that but I’ve been looking at a couple of up and coming bands like Joe Pug, Trampled By Turtles, Punch Brothers, The Hackinsaws Ect. Here’s your chance to let me know if there is anyone out there that masses of people want to hear and I will do my best to see if I can make something happen. We’ve got some good changes coming to you this year and I think this year is going to be one for the record books. Feel free to post your responses on facebook.

Hey Folks,

Hope every one is making the most out of the last bit of beautiful weather we’ve had here lately. We’ve been very busy trying to secure a new venue for Riverfest 2012 and also doing some other fun things. Have you ever seen a decomposition chart. It’s amazing how long it takes for something to decompose compared to the amount of time it would take to just throw it away properly in the first place. We’ve got a brand new section on the website devoted to that. It’s actually on the trash removal page underneath of “Programs” on Earth Korps’ website. Here’s a link http://earthkorps.webs.com/trashremoval.htm

Also I’ve been getting quite a few submissions for the river fest already. I will get back to all of you as time goes on, but I want to have an accurate amount of time to listen to each band and also give other bands a chance to be heard without doing a first come fisrt serve basis. I will send an initial e-mail to each of you stating that I have gotten your links or expressd interest and will probably not make final decisions untill late March or early April. Thanks for all the support from both ends of the environmental support and the musical support for our fundraiser. Lets make this thing huge

Hey folks,

Welcome to 2011…. Oh wait it’s 2012. Where does time go? Well anoywho I’m here to let you know that Earth Korps is going to be pushing some very cool things this year. We’ve got some very motivated people behind our cause and things are going to get very interesting come Spring. For now though we’ve got some other excellent new news. We have a new member of our family and her name is Jessica Larson. She has agreed to be our event coordinator this year so you can expect a variety of fun fundraisers possibly even a second music festival. Who doesn’t want more of that action? Info on Jessica and a picture to put with the name are on our website at http://earthkorps.webs.com/ourteam.htm. Also we have finally added the mono filament recycling section to our website so check it out. The link is http://earthkorps.webs.com/monorecycling.htm.  Also we are putting together a list of folks are willing to volunteer. Now this list is not saying that you are committed to coming out every single time we do any sort of clean-up, but if you would like to be kept in the loop of news then send us your e-mail address so we can add you to our list and you will be the first to know of the things we have going on and for volunteer and play opportunities. So to everyone out there who loves the river get ready because we’ve got  2012 in our scope.

Hey folks,

We hope that everyone had a great Christmas and as the year draws to a close we thought that we’d go back and take a look at all of the crazy things that we got ourselves into during this year. It seems like we just get busier and busier the further we go along. This year we obviously were in up to our eyeballs in river trash but we also adopted 30 miles of the Shenandoah River, 3 miles of highway, started an entirely new part to the organization with the mono-filament project, made some great new partners and sponsors, put several new kids through community service projects, broke our own record of amount of trash puled from the river, added 3 new members to the Earth Korps family and even brought some of the greatest bands from near and far together to put on a heck of a show for our fans. 2011 I hope you feel that we were good to you because you were certainly good to us. Also and most importantly we’d like to again thank anyone and everyone who supports what we do be it in monetary contribution, lending us the things we need to get the job done, lending us your backs, or just for patting us on the back. The people are what makes this thing work and I’d like to thank you all sincerely. That being said, please enjoy a few pictures here as we recap just some of the things we have done this year.

FWD. Top River Success Stories of 2011

No were not on this letter, but I think it is safe to say that the things accomplished by us here in the valley in the year 2011 were an awesome success and we definitely ranked number one in my opinion. With that being said, this is an e-mail I received detailing some of the other interesting river stories of the year and thought that everyone might like to have a read. This is not my article. I am simply copying and pasting. I believe this originated from the American Rivers Newsletter.

Condit Dam breachThe Condit Dam Removal During the Year of the River

After working for more than 20 years, in cooperation with our partners, American Rivers celebrated a dramatic explosion that kicked off the removal of Washington’s 95-year old, 125-foot Condit dam in October. The significance of this achievement is one of the reasons why American Rivers dubbed 2011 “the year of the river.”

Removing the dam will restore a free-flowing White Salmon River and revitalize salmon and steelhead runs. This victory is a great example of the work American Rivers is able to accomplish thanks in part to the support we receive from members and activists such as yourself.

Chicago River, ILAttention Bears, Cubs, and Bulls: Chicago River is Becoming a Cleaner Watering Hole

Following its listing as the #4 Most Endangered River in America for 2011, efforts to transform the Chicago River into a much cleaner waterway sprang into action.

Thanks to the news coverage we generated, local agencies stopped dumping 1.2 BILLION gallons of untreated wastewater into the Chicago River. Chicago was one of a small handful of cities dumping without treating.
